PCGen Released

I've never used this software, but it looks interesting. http://pcgen.org/2013/12/23/pcgen-6-02-00-released/ PCGen looks like it mostly supports D20 type games, but is modifiable.  It looks like PCGen is just starting to add in character generation for non D20.

Mutant Future Christmas Themed Adventure

Bad Santa: An Adventure Concept for your Mutant Future or Post Apocalyptic Game So I *might* be running a game session tonight, I'm kind of the back up guy.  We will have possibly three GM's present, and I'm probably 3rd in line.  But as one looks like will be a no show and the other is new, I figure I better have at least a concept of an adventure setup.  So for a quick and dirty set of ideas I used the Beast & Barbarians Golden Edition adventure idea generator to generate some broad concepts for an adventure, and then applied them to a Mutant Future setting.  I also wanted to have the adventure Christmas/Holiday themed.  So here goes. Back Story The party is friends with a mutant settlement that relies on a semi-working robotical farm for food.  Some kind of robotical unit snuck into the village and stole the nuclear power cell from one of the main CPU that controls the farm.  A scout from the village tracked the bot's path into the ru...

The End Campaign

Steve ran a campaign in the D20 supplement known as " The End ".  It is the Biblical apocalypse with a twist.  "The meek shall inherit the earth" means that some people will be left behind after the tribulation and the sheep and the goats are separated to their eternal destinies.  Those left behind are the "meek" and have to deal with an earth transitioning from the past to something new...and the apocalypse elements are still present...supernatural beings, animals that have lost their fear of man, and a rapidly changing landscape.  Human survivors are few and not always friendly. Here is just a recap of what has happened so far. Our party meets at at the remnants of a local gun store and plunders it Our party sends a few people to scout out a local supermarket that is mostly looted. Some food is found but an unfortunate altercation happens and two people who may have been just looting like we were for survival end up being killed by a member of our...

Dungeons and Dragons Pro Option 3

Option Three: Using Base Stats for Saving Throws Inspiration :  N/A Reason :  Simplification Rule Description: Rather than have separate states for saving throws, saving throws are now just roll under an appropriate state.  Charm type spells would be either Wisdom or Intelligence.  Paralyses would be Strength or Constitution.  Wands and Staffs would be Dex (getting out of the way).  Etc... Monsters/Foes would use their hit dice + 10 as their base saves. Variants Variant 3A: The level of the spell would be added to the saving die roll (bad). Variant 3B : The difference between the level or hit dice of the caster minus the level or hit dice of character's level would be added to the saving die roll.   NPCs/Monsters would start with a 10 or under roll, adjust needed save with level vs hit dice. Example . A 7th level wizard attacks a 10 Hit Dice dragon with a Fireball spell.  The Dragon has a monster base save of 10 + 10 for it's hit dice ...

Post Apocalyptic RPG List

I'm not that big on magic in RPG's.  I do like Swords and Sorcery RPG's that tend to look at magic as something sinister, something alien. In these settings magic seduces it's users with promises of power and then ends up spitting them out as corrupt minions.  That is about the only concept of magic that appeals to me some reason.  Other than that you can pretty much keep your wizards except as adversaries that need a good bashing. So what RPG's do you play that don't have magic besides swords and sorcery type games that aren't, well, boring? Lot's actually, but mainly futuristic ones. I've always liked post apocalyptic RPG's.  Strait Sci-Fi far-future games with interstellar travel I enjoy but they tend to be hard to play...not impossible but harder.  The post apocalyptic settings tend to be easier to manage for me but still unpredictable for players.  Post-apocalyptic games (or P-A games) are easy for fantasy players to transition over to as ...

Barbarians of Lemuria One Shot

Here is a rough outline of the  Prescott Area Role Playing Gamers' Association  Barbarians of Lemuria one off. Player: Steve (Korgath the Barbarian) GM: Collin Korgath Setup Korgath goes to the Wayfaring Wench tavern seeking a former love, the "dancer" Shena. Korgath arm wrestles an unnamed character and accidentally breaks his arm (Korgath didn't know this was actually one of the King's spies). Guards enter the tavern, Shena's roommate Jezabel points out Korgath to them. Korgath eludes guards and King's spy and slips out the back, only to be surrounded by even more guards and Aldus the King's Captain. Aldus takes Korgath to see the King. The King accuses Korgath of kidnapping his new lover, Shena, and taking a priceless opal. The King's sorcerer searches Korgath's mind by magic, almost triggering Korgath to attack, but his search of Korgath's memories is inconclusive. The King gives Korgath 20 days to find Shena and the O...

Temple of Elemental Evil, Follow On

I think we have had three sessions since I last blogged.  Here is just a very quick update off memory. The Players Rycros - Human Cleric (Robert) Juliana - Human Cleric (Lucy) Roygers - Human Paladin (Collin) The Italian - Human Fighter (Josh) / not character's real name, but hard to pronounce / remember 3 NPC's A Fighter, Bard, and Druid run by the DM (will update with names later). Session #1 The party returned to the keep / gate house again, this time they were met by a horde of zombies.  We dispatched those with a bunch of flaming oil flask that we had recovered earlier.  Having 2+ clerics turning the zombies continuously made the battle fairly quick and easy.  Then we came upon a group of Knolls. Rather than fight them we bribed them with a good chunk of loot to take us to the leader of the keep.  One of the Knolls lead us to a passageway and then departed.  We spied cult guards down the passage and we decided to charge. It was a bl...

Rules Light vs Rules Few

Ok, I understand that a lot of pen and pencil role players are starting to play again after years of abstentia...I am one of them.  There is a push, due to the fact that most of us are older and have many more competing interest than we did when we used to play, to use rules light systems.  I'm cool with that, especially when a core system is rules light but it is modular enough so that those of us who want some extra options can bolt them in.  What I don't like is people creating an 8 page mini-game and calling it a complete rules light system.  I think rules few would be a better term...here is a barely passable minimalist rules system that you can use to start a game with.  I don't think any of these 4 page or 8 page games are complete without house rules and lot's of DM work. My problem isn't with those who make minimalist rule sets and publish them.  My problem is that in the era of self promotion these little 8 page "games" are g...

Temple of Elemental Evil, A Second Attempt: The Death of Hawk

Initially a band of three adventures, Adriana a human priest of Paylor, Roygers Flint an overly confident Paladin, and the half-orc fighter Hawk set off to investigate rumors of evil stirrings in a nearby town.  When they arrived everything seemed fairly normal.  There were rumors whoever that a long dead cult were once again active.  There was also significant brigand activity in the area.  The adventures sought more information and determined and evil presence was surrounding the equipment store manager's hired help.  Also they found out that a Taylor had in months passed sown some garments for a customer that unbeknownst to the kind woman had the symbol of the ancient cult embedded in the garments. The adventures encountered a group of elves (well two elves and a half elf) in a tavern and struck up a conversation.  The elves turned out to have been drawn to the area for the same reasons the adventures came, and decided (for h...

AD&D 1st Edition Play

The group- (all first level).  The below represents three sessions of play. Go Forth - Elvish Female Thief Adriana - Human Female Cleric Lothar - Human Male Mage Dorfin - Dwarf Male Fighter Dungeon - Temple of Elemental Evil So we started off outside of a town.  On our way to the town we had an encounter with bandits that resulted in our first TPK (total party kill).  The DM decided that some other travelers warded off the bandits, bandaged us up, and left.  We healed up for a few days and then headed into town, where we bought some provisions and heard rumors about an abandoned keep where evil once again was stirring.  We also met 3 NPCs in town, which agreed to join us for half of any treasure we might find. Ana - 2nd Level Elven Thief Seth - 2nd Level Druid Kaleb - 2nd Level Fighter On our way to the temple we encountered some giant frogs.  One almost killed the Cleric but after a brief combat we dispatched the frogs.  This was our o...

Barbarians of Lemuria G+ Hangout

Hi all,    I'm pondering putting together my first G+ hangout for gaming. The time would be 8:30 PM Eastern / 5:30 Pacific on Friday, January 18th.  I'm thinking of using the Barbarians of Lemuria rule set and I'll GM. (Yeah I know this is from Conan and not Lemuria...for our purposes, same difference) Here is a link to the free version of the rules- http://www.1km1kt.net/rpg/barbarians-of-lemuria There are only a few things missing from the free version, like boons and flaws, so feel free to pregen a character if you wish, or I will walk you through creating a character at the first gaming session.  For sorcerers and priest if you make your character in advance let me know so I can work with you on a few basic spells for magi and boons/flaw cast effects for priest. Boons and Flaws and a few other details we will flush out at the beginning of the game session. Note the setting will just be generic swords and sorcery so don't get too hung up on the...
